How to Maintain a Compost Heap

People who have garden generally have big amount of organic waste, from grass clippings to dead leaves and plants. They waste a good amount of money and time when they transport thee waste to a landfill. It is not only the good compost they are wasting but also the money spent on transportation (like the garbage mans time, the charges involved for removal and so on). It is just a comic act.

This organic waste which you are trying to get rid of can be the best fertilizer or chemical required for your garden, and if they are decomposed properly it will turn out to be the best nutrition for your plants. So all the organic waste you throw could be converted to a good fertilizer for you garden.

Generally all the compost is collected in some spot in your backyard. You may think that heaps of this compost will be giving out a rotten and garbage smell. But, if you maintain them properly you can produce one without a bad smell. When I started my compost heap to improve the environmental health, I made a lot of mistakes which included obstructing the heap from the oxygen it required to keep it dry and thus landing in a non-beneficial way which started letting out pungent smell around and the government agents were at my door to enquire about it.

A higher square footage is what is required to put all these materials when you choose a spot. It is not advisable to have deeper pits as they will not serve the purpose, and will not be exposed properly, so it is better to have them spread over a big area. The most ideal place it to spread it over the roof of a shed or tool shack ( making some arrangements to prevent it from falling ) I have seen this being done many times as it is out of the way although it occupies a big area.

The organic garbage from your field, garden or kitchen is only the compost heap like leaves, grass, any food that is left over and cannot be eaten, or newspaper ( should not contain more than a fifth of the heap as it is hard to compost with the other materials ) A barrel is a good storage for all these things which may fill up soon by a few weeks. To get the compost is easy but the compost is got when it becomes hard.

The whole heap of the compost should be moistened after a collection of the materials which helps in composting. It is also necessary to chop every ingredient in the pile into small pieces as they can be and as they squeeze together they start to decompose. Expose them to fresh air with head outside by using shovel to mix or with an aeration tool to dig plenty of small holes into them which will increase the flow of oxygen to each and every part of the pile, as oxygen is needed for decomposition of any thing.

If the conserving of a compost pile is interesting to you, think of an appropriate place which would suit its placement. The place should not obstruct the garden and have enough square footage also and a place where the pungent smell can be avoided although it does not give a pleasant feeling when you have a walk in your garden.
