Gardening can lead to gloabal warming as cultivation of the soil leads to release of carbon dioxide and many people do not know this. The tilling and pressing the soil, spoils the good fungi, and leading to the penetrating of fertilizers like nitrogen and manure out of the soil which in turn pollutes the drinking water.
Global warming
Another important fact which many of us are not aware is that the pill bugs, microbes, fungi and worms exhale about 10 times more carbon dioxide than humans do when they inhale, digest food and expire. Earlier the plants had the capacity to absorb carbon dioxide from the cultivated land, but not in the present times.
The rise in the temperature of the globe is averagely due to the carbon dioxide released when cultivating the soil. The only good news is that cultivating can be reduced by covering or sheet collection of organic debris.
Good Fungi
VAM that is the vesicular- arbuscular- mycorrhizae is the beneficial fungi present in the uncultivated soil which is has a depending relationship with the plants. The root hairs are increased a by their filaments and supply essential nutrients to the plant. They release Zinc, copper, potassium and phosperous, and plants provide the fungi with carbohydrates in return. A garden can be grown without cultivating the soil much by covering heavily the soil till it becomes soft and crumbly.
Surpus Nitrogen
There are many people who waste manures and gardening while gardening. Whereas the farmers do the reverse, they require only a quarter to one third of nitrogen to add with an inch of organic debris, horse or cow manure. For growing lettuce and sweet corns, Kate Burroughs of Sebastopol California used this method. Only a very small quantity is required in the case of broccoli and pear trees by farmers. So, there is wastage of money and fertilizers, when gardeners use large amount of compost and manure when compared to farmers.
Trying to avoid excess of anything in case of gardening is the best advice that can be given. Anything in excess or deficit is not a healthy habit and this applies in the case of gardening too.
